7 Seconds or Less: (Part 2/2) Why Your Mobile Website Needs to Make a Quick Impact

As mentioned in my last post I’m a big fan of Basketball.

Earlier this week I referenced a book called “:07 Seconds Or Less” by Jack McCallum.  The book’s title refers to NBA Coach D’Antoni’s belief that an NBA offense can score easy points if they push to score in the first 7 seconds of all their offensive possessions. This results from the other team’s defense not having time to set up. Steve Nash, Canada’s best basketball player ever, captained this offense for Phoenix for many years.

You Have 3 Seconds…..Your Mobile Website Needs to Make an Impact Quickly

If Your Mobile Website Doesn’t Load in 3 Seconds Or Less – Users Will Leave it!!

This got me thinking about the impact of time when it comes to business. In Part 1 of this blog post, I looked at the time that a job seeker has to catch the attention of an IT recruiter. There is more and more evidence that users expect mobile websites to be mobile friendly and to load within 3 seconds. If the sites take more than 3 seconds to load from a mobile device there are overwhelming statistics that users leave/“bounce” from the site in search of another site that is mobile friendly and loads quickly.

Here are a couple interesting points to consider:

  •  Smartphone and tablet owners spend more time on their mobile devices than PCs
  •  Mobile searches have grown by 400% since 2010 according to Google’s Get Mo
  •  71% of mobile phone users expect websites to load as quickly on their mobile phones as their desktops
  •  43% of mobile web users are unlikely to return to a slow site
  •  57% would not recommend a business with a bad mobile site
  •  40% have turned to a competitor’s website after a bad mobile experience

It is very clear we all need to have our sites mobile friendly.  More and more people are viewing websites via mobile devices and this trend will continue. Businesses that don’t make their sites mobile friendly are losing out. Here are a couple of tips to keep in mind when launching a mobile site.

Your mobile website should:

  •          Load in less than 3 seconds
  •          Be easily viewable from mobile phones and tablets
  •          Not require people pinching in and out in order to read text
  •          Have easily readable and touchable buttons for easy navigation through your site
  •          Provide easy access to the main information people want when visiting your site from a mobile device. (company phone number, location, hours of operation, what the company does, call to actions, etc)

When designing a mobile version of your website it’s important to remember people browsing your site from a phone are often in a rush and just want some quick information during their commute. We want to make things as simple as possible for them to find this information and hopefully engage with your company as quickly as possible.
